Add Romance to Fall, Even when it is Cold and Grey!

RAIN, RAIN DON'T GO AWAY

Cold, rainy weather can be very depressing. It can also be extremely refreshing. If the inclement weather puts you in the doldrums, consider trying out a few of the ideas below to turn the foul weather into a unique and romantic experience.

  • Make a cup of hot tea, hot chocolate or flavored coffee and drink it with biscotti or some other cookies with your sweetheart
  • Play scrabble or some other board games
  • Turn out all the lights, light some candles and listen to some jazz or music you really enjoy
  • Light a fire and sip brandy or your favorite liqueur or specialty drink
  • Bake cookies with your love one
  • Work on scrapbooks together or simply snuggle on the couch and look through old photo albums together
  • Bundle up and take a walk together in the invigorating cold air and then come back home to snuggle

THE KISS OF THE WEEK

There is a little game I play with my wife. I call it the kiss of the week. Each Sunday I designate a certain place to be the "kissing spot" and it is there that I softly plant my lips when I want to let her know I appreciate something she has done or to simply let her know that I love her.

I once heard an elderly man describe the success of his 75 year blissful marriage to his wife. He attributed it to the fact that he told his wife daily that he loved her and kissed her at least twice each day. I aim to follow his example and by having the kissing spot of the week, it helps me to make certain I am not forgetting to give my wife the daily kisses she deserves so much.

Some of the kissing spots have been: behind her left ear, between her eyes, the soft spot in the middle of her cheek and on the nape of her neck. It's fun trying to decide where the next "spot" will be and my wife looks forward to the new kiss at the beginning of the week. I do not forego kissing her on the lips, but I do make a conscious effort to kiss her often on the "kissing spot." If your sweetheart hasn't been getting the kisses he or she deserves or you are looking for a way to be a more creative kisser, perhaps you too can implement the Kiss of the Week into your romantic lifestyle.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

Your darling can never be told enough that he or she is loved and special. An inexpensive way of doing so is by sending a card or note. An inexpensive and CLEVER way of doing so is by sending a coded card or note.

It is easy to come up with codes. You can use the standard 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, etc. or you can come up with a completely different code using letters, numbers or symbols of your own creation. If the code is simple enough, you may want to let your sweetheart try to solve it on their own or for a complicated code, you might want to send the key to the code at a different time.

You can mail the coded message, fax it to him or her at work (the co-workers will be so envious) or place it in a book she is reading. You may want to cut out letters from magazines or newspapers to address the letter or fax so she won't recognize your handwriting. Watch out 007!

Playing Your Cards Right

The other night Athena was sitting on the floor, folding a basket of clothes. I have never liked doing laundry or the dishes so I try to help out in other ways like making dinner, picking up around the house and taking care of the gardening. I don't think my wife likes to do the laundry either, but she does it every week and never complains about it. While I was watching her fluffing and folding shirts I began to think how thankful I was that my underwear drawer was never empty. I went into the bedroom and picked out a card from my secret stash and scribbled a quick note to thank her for always making sure my drawer was full of underwear. Then I placed it in the drawer for her to find when she was putting the freshly folded clothes away.

Because I had some blank greeting cards on hand, it was easy to do something nice on the spot while I was thinking about how much I appreciated my wife. I also keep a stack of cards at my office and regularly mail them to my wife's office or to her at home. Sometimes I will fill one out and put it in the car for her to find.

My wife particularly likes the Victorian cards that are reprints of cards used about a hundred years ago. I try to buy a variety and I concentrate on buying them blank inside so I can use them for nearly any occasion. The night my wife was doing laundry, I happened to have a card with a little girl washing something on a washboard. It looked as though I planned all week to have the card there when laundry day came up.
